Joyful Effort

Joyful effort, also known as virya, is one of the six paramitas (perfections) in Buddhism. It calls us to fully participate in every moment. Instead of going through life mechanically, by routine, what happens when we meet our life with energy and zeal? When we fully inhabit everything we do? Brushing our teeth. Washing the dishes. Doing our taxes. Saying goodbye to a loved one who is dying. Numberless creations, I vow to receive — energetically receive — everything that comes. This is virya paramita.
